Additives

Additives aren't a recent invention. For example, Saltpetre was used in the Middle Ages to preserve meat. Colours were used in food by the ancient Egyptians over two thousand years ago.

Lots of people are scared of ‘E numbers' and long chemical sounding names because they don't know what they mean and think they may be bad for you. However many E numbers occur naturally in normal everyday foods. These foods and ingredients have simply been given a code number to make it easier to fit everything on the label; and also to make it easier for everyone to understand labels - as the law says that all food manufacturers have to use the same descriptions for their ingredients.

As an example: - If you analyse an apple, you will find it has about 10 different naturally occurring E numbers in it. Another example is E948, which is Oxygen.

There are VERY strict laws in Europe about what can and what cannot be put into a food, and in what quantities. At Campina we make sure that all of our ingredients are of the highest standard and fall well within legal limits.

As well as our best milk, YAZOO uses the following ingredients to make sure we stay as Britain's favourite milkshake. The amounts used are very small, and are used to make the product look better, feel better in your mouth and smell and taste better.

Flavouring

Chocolate flavour YAZOO gets its chocolatey taste from fat-reduced cocoa powder, plus a little vanilla flavour and caramel to give a rounded taste.

For the other flavours: like all similar products, YAZOO uses flavourings to make our drinks taste the way you like them best. These flavourings are made in factories to have exactly the same molecules as the taste they are copying. In many countries, these are known as ‘nature-identical' flavours, but that description does not exist within UK labelling law, so we simply call them ‘flavouring'. Because they are manufactured this way, these flavours are available in large quantities all the year round, they always taste exactly the same and they are a convenient way for a big factory to produce a high quality product in large volumes. (YAZOO sells over 80 million bottles in the UK every year)

Stabilisers

Stabilisers help mix together ingredients like oil and water that would normally separate; stabilisers prevent them from separating again.

Carrageenan (E407)

Carrageenan is a naturally occurring family of carbohydrates and has been used in food for hundreds of years. It is extracted by boiling a type of red seaweed, which is common in the Atlantic Ocean near Britain, Europe and North America. Nowadays, this seaweed is grown on large underwater farms.

Carrageenan is widely used as an additive by the food industry for its gelling, thickening and stabilising properties. It is used in salad dressings, prepared meat and fish, flavoured milk, processed cheese, ice cream, evaporated milk, cream, cottage cheese, sour cream, infant formula, alcoholic beverages, sauces and dressings. The type of carrageenan that can be added to food in the EU is very specific. It must not be in a chemically degraded (hydrolysed) form.

Cellulose (E460i)

Cellulose is used in Chocolate flavour YAZOO as a stabiliser and emulsifier, which gives the drink a better texture without the need to use high levels of milk-fat. Cellulose is found in all plant stems and has many uses in food.

It is found in sauces, soups, breads, biscuits and cakes, frozen desserts, ice cream, margarine, crisps, spreads, jams, chocolate, quick-setting deserts and milk shakes, it has no known adverse effects.

Guar Gum (E412)

Guar gum is also a stabiliser and thickener and is extracted from the beans of the leguminous Guar shrub (Latin name; Cyamopsis tetragonoloba) ‘Leguminous' is the name for a group of plants including ‘pulse' vegetables such as peas, beans and lentils.

Guar gum is widely used in bakeries, dairies and the production of processed meat, dressings and sauces; and for preparing chocolate drinks and juices.

It is an important natural food supplement with high nutritional value, for weight gain and cholesterol reduction. Guar is also widely used in medicines, cosmetics, leather, and many other products.
